”ORGANIZING ABANDON” is a project that artist Shooshie Sulaiman (based in Malaysia, b.1973) has been developing in Onomichi city, Hiroshima since 2013. In the slopes of the old part of Onomichi city, Sulaiman encountered the ruins of a former greengrocer's which was going to be demolished and started a long-term project to rebuild/reincarnate it in its entirety. None of the objects belonging to the ruins were discarded, all of them are preserved and recorded to be reborn as part of the art work and the renovated house.
The project's aim is not to merely physically renovate the house, the process is important, too. Various people, including artists and craftsmen whom Sulaiman met in Onomichi, are involved, and new interactions have begun.
In addition, the cultural and historical background of Malaysia that Sulaiman has been exploring, and the relationship between Jomon Culture and Sundaland will also be incorporated into the project.
At the end of October 2018, a balcony of the Malaysian traditional style, designed by Shooshie Sulaiman, will finally be installed.Malaysian craftsmen will visit Onomichi and install the balcony themselves. Please come and see the development of this work.
